The Effect of Giving Mixture Drink of Katuk Leaves (Saorpusandrogynus (L.) Merr) and Mung Bean (Vigna Radiate L.) on Nutritional Status of Lctating Mothers and The Growth of their Infants
ABSTRACT
Objectives : Human breast milk is currently considered as essential nutrient for all infants. Poor breast milk production is the mayor cause of breast feeding failure. The development of mixtures drink of Katuk leaves and green bean which has the ability to help increase breast milk production (lactogogues effect) is one of the alternatives. This beverage has also nutrient contents (protein, CHO, vitamins and minerals). The aim of this study was to assess the effect of consumption of mixtures drink of Katuk leaves and green bean on nutritional status of lactating mothers and growth of their infants.
Methods : The subjects were 60 Indonesian mothers and were given mixtures drink of Katuk leaves and green bean (MDKB) for 30 days. A Quasi-experimental research designs with single blind randomized controlled trials. The subjects divided by 2 that is one group of mothers who are given a 400 cc of MKDB, and another group is not consuming mix drink (NMDKB). The mothers was assessed within 1 month postpartum for anthropometry, diet and lactation history, and infant's birth weight.
Results :Group MKDB (n=30) had significantly higher CHO intakes than group NMDKB. There was no difference in weight gain in the two groups, but it was appeared that the group of MKDB having BMI was higher than the group of NMKDB respectively 24.5 and 23.5. Percentage of weight gain in infants of group MKDM (152.7% ± 5.3%) was higher than in infants from group of NMDKB (139.7% ± 5.8%; P = 0.046).
Conclusion :MKDB can be used as lactogogues drink. It has an advantage to infant growth, but for lactating mothers, MKDB is still needed modification such as by reducing CHO content and to increase its micronutrient quality in term of the decreasing the risk for obesity in mothers.
