Isolation of antioxidant and xanthine oxidase inhibitor from n-Butanol extract of Andaliman fruit (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC.)
Abstract:
The fruits of andaliman (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC.) are well known in North Sumatera, Indonesia and commonly used in Batak traditional cuisine. This research was conducted to isolate and elucidate the compounds from the fruits which have antioxidant and xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity. Based on spectrum data, the compounds obtained from n-butanol extract were polar terpenoids. They are 17-((23E,26E)-23- ethylidene - 29 - hydroxy - 29-(2- hydroxypropoxy)-25-methyldec-26-en-20-yl)-13,15-dimethyl-gona-1,3,5(10)-trien-3-ol and cholest-5-en-3β-yl β-D- glucopyranoside. Free radical scavenging potential of those compounds had been investigated by in vitro evaluation against DPPH and xanthine oxidase. The results showed that they are active as antioxidant with IC50 68.35 µg/mL and 60.52 µg/mL and also active as xanthine oxidase inhibitor with IC50 0.34 µg/mL and 0.06 µg/mL.
