ANALISIS VARIASI SLICE THICKNESS TERHADAP VISIBILITAS AKAR SARAF PADA MRI LUMBAL SEKUENS T2-WI TSE PADA KASUS RADIKULOPATI
Lumbar MRI examination is an essential modality for evaluating spinal abnormalities, particularly in the cases of radiculopathy. In this matter, the choice of slice thickness plays a crucial role in determining the image contrast, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), spatial resolution, and the visibility of small structures such as nerve roots. According to previous studies, axial T2-weighted TSE sequences of the lumbar spine typically use slice thicknesses of 3 mm and 4 mm to achieve optimal image quality and visibility of lumbar structures. This research aims to analyse the effect of using 3 mm and 4 mm slice thicknesses on the image quality of axial T2-weighted TSE lumbar MRI, including SNR, contrast, noise, and spatial resolution, and how these factors influence the visibility of nerve roots for detecting lumbar radiculopathy. This research applied a quantitative analytical study with an exploratory approach. The research was conducted at Persahabatan Hospital and included 16 patients with clinically confirmed radiculopathy who underwent lumbar MRI using axial T2-weighted TSE sequences with 3 mm and 4 mm slice thicknesses. As for the data collection, it was performed through among the other things observation, experimentation, and questionnaires. The questionnaire data were subsequently analysed using SPSS, including tests for normality and differences, as well as Fleiss’ Kappa to assess inter-rater agreement among radiologists in determining the optimal slice thickness for axial T2-weighted TSE lumbar MRI in the cases of radiculopathy. As the result, this research demonstrated that a 3 mm slice thickness in axial T2-weighted TSE sequences provided better nerve root visibility. This is because thinner slices offer superior spatial resolution for small structures compared to the thicker slices, even though they have a lower SNR.
