Radiologically, Computed Tomography (CT) is a diagnostic imaging modality that creates cross-
sectional images of the body based on X-ray absorption, displayed on a computer screen. CT scans are

a primary procedure frequently employed to diagnose abnormalities in the paranasal sinuses, utilizing
multiple image slices to evaluate both bone and soft tissue structures. Slice thickness refers to the
thickness of the image slices generated by the CT scanner during patient scanning. Among the various
CT procedures performed in hospitals, Multislice CT (MSCT) of the Paranasal Sinuses (SPN) is a
common examination. The objective of this research is to evaluate the results of MSCT (Multislice
Computed Tomography) examination of the Paranasal Sinuses using slice thickness variations of 3 mm
and 4 mm at Dr. Zainoel Abidin General Hospital.
This research utilized a qualitative research design with a literature review approach. Quantitative
methods were employed to investigate, describe, and explain the findings. Data processing is
conducted using qualitative descriptive methods, meaning it involves analyzing data obtained from
literature studies of books and journals that discuss the use of slice thickness in the MSCT examination
of the Paranasal Sinuses. The collected data is processed and analyzed using descriptive methods to
draw conclusions. The sample consists of 10 patients undergoing MSCT of the Paranasal Sinuses.
This research concludes that MSCT paranasal sinus examinations are essential for diagnosing
abnormalities in the paranasal sinuses. The procedure for examining the paranasal sinuses using axial
slices involves the following steps: The patient must remove any metal objects that could interfere with
the examination. The patient is placed in a supine position on the examination table, with their head
facing the gantry (Head First). The midline of the head is aligned with the centerline of the head
holder, and the height of the head is adjusted to be level with the external auditory meatus (EAM). The
use of a 3 mm slice thickness produces images with good spatial resolution. The advantage of a 3 mm
slice thickness is that it provides images with better spatial resolution, although it generates more noise
compared to a 4 mm slice thickness. The recap of anatomical image assessment between 3 mm and 4
mm slice thickness shows a difference of 0.7. Meanwhile, the recap of image quality assessment
between 3 mm and 4 mm slice thickness shows a difference of 1.4.
