Background of the Study: pathologically, laryngeal cancer is the second most common malignancy of the
upper aerodigestive tract, with an estimated 110,000–130,000 new cases reported worldwide. The Radiology
Department plays a crucial role in assisting physicians in diagnosing laryngeal tumours through CT scan
examinations. However, at Radiology Department of Langsa City Regional General Hospital, there is
currently no specific Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for conducting CT scans of the larynx in tumour
cases, and contrast agents are not used in the examination process. According to previous studies, the use of
contrast agents can significantly enhance the visualization of abnormalities (tumours) in the examined organs.
Research Objectives: this research aims to evaluate the CT scan examination procedures for laryngeal
tumours carried out at Radiology Department of Langsa City General Hospital. As for the evaluation, it
covers among the other things the technical implementation of the procedure, the assessment of the Standard
Operating Procedure (SOP), and the evaluation of the image quality produced from the examination.
Research Design: This research applies a descriptive qualitative design with a case study approach,
conducted at Langsa City Regional General Hospital starting from September up to December 2024.
Meanwhile, the data collection is carried out using a triangulation method, which includes direct
observations, interviews with three radiology specialists and three experienced radiographers (with more than
five years of experience), and document analysis of three CT scan cases of laryngeal tumours. Thereafter, the
collected data are processed through data reduction, data presentation in the form of quotations, and
conclusion drawing, which are reviewed and analysed using the latest literature.
Research Findings: The research found that the CT scan examination procedures for laryngeal tumours
undertaken at Langsa City Regional General Hospital have been carried out according to standard protocols
in terms of patient preparation and examination techniques. However, it was discovered that there is no
specific Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for this examination, and contrast media, which could enhance
the clarity of tumour images, was not used. Despite this, the resulting images were still able to assist
physicians in making a diagnosis by providing crucial information, such as the location, size, and extent of
the tumour, as well as involvement of the cartilage and metastasis to lymph nodes.
Conclusion: the CT scan examination for laryngeal tumours carried at Langsa City General Hospital is
performed without the use of contrast media to minimize the risk of side effects, following a simple yet
effective procedure. This examination is capable of providing comprehensive information regarding the
tumour, such as its location, size, extent, and metastasis, thereby supporting accurate diagnosis and treatment
planning.
