Background of this Research is motivated by the use of CT scans as the primary imaging
modality in head injury cases, whereby selecting the appropriate kernel plays a critical role in
producing optimal diagnostic images. At Cut Meutia Regional General Hospital in Lhokseumawe,
the routine practice involves using the H40 kernel for soft tissue imaging and the H60 kernel for
bone imaging. However, a systematic evaluation of the effectiveness of these kernel applications is
still needed to optimize the quality of diagnostic images.
This research aims to analyse the impact of kernel variations on the quality of head CT scan
images in head injury cases, particularly by comparing the effectiveness of the H40 kernel for soft
tissue visualization and the H60 kernel for bone visualization.
Research Design applied herein is descriptive analytical method, with data collected through
among the other things observation and interviews. The study was conducted starting from
October up to November 2024 carried out at Cut Meutia Regional General Hospital. As for the
samples, they were selected using purposive sampling, utilizing secondary data consisting of CT
scan images and expert evaluations of head injury cases.
Results of Research revealed that the H40 kernel is optimal for visualizing brain soft tissues,
providing minimal noise and good contrast, while the H60 kernel excels in displaying detailed
bone structures and fractures with high spatial resolution. The combination of these two kernels
offers comprehensive diagnostic information for the evaluation of head injuries.
Conclusion of this research confirms that selecting the appropriate kernel is crucial for
optimizing the quality of head CT scan images. The use of the H40 kernel for soft tissue
evaluation and the H60 kernel for bone structure analysis constitutes an effective protocol in the
management of head injury cases.
