ANALYSIS OF PAEDIATRIC HEAD CT SCAN EXAMINATION PROCEDURES FOR
HYDROCEPHALUS CASES UNDERTAKEN AT MOTHER AND CHILD HOSPITAL,
ACEH

Deliberately, this research analyses the examination procedures for paediatric head CT scans in
clinical cases of hydrocephalus undertaken at Mother and Child Hospital, Aceh. In this matter,
hydrocephalus is a central nervous system disorder commonly observed in children, with an
incidence rate in Indonesia reaching 10 per 1,000 births annually. As for the aim of this research, it
is to analyse the examination procedures for paediatric head CT scans in hydrocephalus cases,
focusing on among the other things the procedural description, analysis of parameters, image
quality, and radiation dose.
This research applies a qualitative method with descriptive approach, with data collected through
observation, interviews, and documentation. While data were obtained from paediatric head CT
scan protocol documents and image results assessed by medical experts starting from October up
to November 2024.
The findings reveal that the paediatric head CT scan examination procedures conducted at Mother
and Child Hospital, Aceh, still utilize adult protocols with parameters set out at Kv: 120 and mAs:
130. The application of adult protocols for paediatric patients results in suboptimal images due to
higher radiation doses on smaller anatomical structures with different densities compared to adult
heads. Based on the interviews with radiographers and radiologists indicate that the image quality
produced is insufficient for accurately assessing paediatric head abnormalities and brain structures.
This research recommends the necessity of adjusting paediatric-specific protocols that take
radiation protection into account, in accordance with Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency
(BAPETEN) regulations. The permitted radiation dose for paediatric head CT scans ranges
between 0.011 and 0.0032 k (mSv mGy¹ cm¹), depending on the age group (0 to 10 years), without
compromising the quality of the resulting images.
