Research Background: purposefully, this research was conducted on the subjects who visited the
radiology department for a non-contrast abdominal CT scan examination, where they were
diagnosed with renal colic by a urologist. In this matter, the examination was performed following
the standard operating procedures for abdominal CT scans undertaken at Teungku Peukan General
Hospital, Southwest Aceh Regency. The subjects varied in age, weight, and height. For subjects
with low body weight and shorter stature, the CT scan images showed more hypodense results.
Furthermore, the researcher intends to analyse the CT scan images of the abdomen obtained using
140 kV, which adheres to the standard operating procedures for abdominal CT scans undertaken at
RSUTP ABDYA, and compare them with the images obtained using 120 kV. This is because
optimal radiographic image quality is essential to produce radiographs that provide the most
accurate and comprehensive diagnostic information.
General Objective: the general objective of this study is to analyse the image quality of noncontrast abdominal CT scan examinations in renal colic cases, performed using 120 kV and 140
kV, carried out at Teungku Peukan General Hospital, Southwest Aceh Regency.
Research Method: this research applies a qualitative descriptive method conducted by using
observation approach.
Data Collection Methods, it was conducted through among the other things Literature Review
namely the author collected documents and data by reviewing reference books related to
abdominal CT scans in cases of renal colic, as well as those concerning the optimal kV settings for
abdominal CT scans; Direct Observation namely conducting direct observations in the field on
subjects undergoing abdominal CT scans; Questionnaire namely administering a questionnaire to
one radiologist and three radiographers regarding their assessment of image quality in abdominal
CT scans for renal colic cases. Thereafter, the collected data was then accordingly processed and
analysed.
Research Result: based on the data processing and analysis, the examinations using X-ray tube
voltage parameters of 120 kV and 140 kV were performed according to standard operating
procedures. Subjects did not require any special preparation other than removing metal objects that
could cause artifacts and drinking water before the examination. The use of 140 kV resulted in
images with higher contrast and better anatomical structure clarity, but with a higher radiation dose
compared to 120 kV. On the other hand, 120 kV produced images with adequate resolution but
lower contrast. Image evaluation based on the questionnaire showed that the use of 140 kV had a
higher average score in terms of clarity of the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra
compared to 120 kV.
