MRI of the shoulder joint is one of the most commonly performed musculoskeletal examinations using MRI modality, as the shoulder joint is one of the most active joints in the human body. Furthermore, to achieve optimal image visualization, the selection of an appropriate coil is crucial for MRI shoulder joint examinations.
This research aims to analyse the comparison of image quality in MRI shoulder joint examinations using shoulder coil and flex coil on the PD Fat-Sat Axial sequence.
This research applies a quantitative research design with a quasi-experimental approach, involving experiments on observed subjects to address the research problem. The MRI shoulder joint examination is conducted using two different types of coils namely the shoulder coil and the flex coil, on a total of 10 samples. Thereafter, the collected data will be processed using SPSS software.
The research was undertaken at Pertamina Central Hospital starting from November up to December 2024.
The results of this research indicate that the calculated SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) and CNR (Contrast-to-Noise Ratio) values for shoulder joint anatomy, assessed using the ROI (Region of Interest) technique, show no statistically significant differences between the Shoulder Coil and Flex Coil, with a p-value of 0.508 for SNR and 0.247 for CNR. Additionally, although no statistically significant differences were found, the Shoulder Coil objectively provides superior image quality, offering higher SNR and CNR values, as well as clearer and sharper anatomical visualization. However, this does not imply that the image quality produced by the Flex Coil is inadequate; visually, the results are comparable. Therefore, both coils can be effectively utilized for MRI shoulder joint examinations depending on patient conditions. For that reason, for the patients with broader shoulders or those with shoulder tumours, the Flex Coil is preferable due to its flexible design, which can better accommodate anatomical variations.
